On September 29, 2017 USCIS released materials to educate HR professionals about changes to the most recent version of Form I-9. Since 1986 all U.S. employers have been required to verify their employees have valid work authorization via completing a Form I-9 in the first few days of their employment. Over the past two decades, Form I-9 has undergone a number of changes; the most recent version (with revision date 07/17/17) became mandatory for all employers to use starting September 18, 2017. In an effort to familiarize employers, authorized agents, and employees with changes and best practices for completing the latest version of Form I-9, USCIS released a series of short videos, available to view on the USCIS I-9 Central website. The videos provide examples and important information on how to complete most fields and provide viewers with completed screen shots of each section. To reach as broad an audience as possible, USCIS released versions in English and Spanish with captioning.
Failure to use the most up-to-date version of the form or fill it out correctly can result in civil penalties in the event of an I-9 audit. For more details about the latest Form I-9, visit and refer to the revised M-274 Handbook for Employers, Guidance for Completing Form I-9.
